Where it came from
Ya Boy Kongming! was produced by studio P.A.WORKS and premiered in 2022 as an adaptation of the manga series written by Yuto Yotsuba and illustrated by Ryo Ogawa. The narrative serves as a whimsical subversion of historical fiction, beginning with the death of the famous Three Kingdoms strategist Zhuge Liang, who is reincarnated into modern-day Shibuya. The production sought to blend high-stakes tactical brilliance with the vibrant, nocturnal energy of Tokyo’s nightlife scene.
The series is noted for its distinctive visual style and its heavy integration of music, which serves as a central plot device as Kongming applies ancient military strategies to the career of an aspiring singer. Directed by Osamu Honma, the project was received favorably by critics for its unique tonal shifts between earnest character drama and comedic absurdity, eventually gaining a dedicated cult following for its infectious opening theme and stylized aesthetic.
