Where it came from
Yakeato no, Okashi no Ki, or The Candy Tree of the Burnt Ruins, is a poignant animated special produced by Shin-Ei Animation and released in 2006. Created as part of a series of educational and remembrance projects, it serves as a sensitive exploration of childhood experiences during the hardships of the postwar era in Japan, aimed at conveying the resilience of spirit amidst scarcity.
The animation reflects the signature style of Shin-Ei, known for its narrative-driven approach to social storytelling. By centering the narrative on the metaphorical and literal search for sweetness in a landscape marked by the aftermath of conflict, the creators sought to bridge the gap between historical memory and contemporary youth. The work was well-received for its gentle, illustrative aesthetic and its commitment to preserving cultural history through a medium accessible to younger generations.
