Yajikita Gakuen Douchuuki

Yajikita Gakuen Douchuuki, or Yajikita Academy Travelogue, was released in 1989 as a two-part original video animation produced by J.C.Staff. The series is based on a manga by Satonaka Machiko, which itself is a loose, comedic modernization of the classic Edo-period literary work Tokaidochu Hizakurige. The narrative follows two high school girls, Yajikita and Kita, as they embark on a chaotic journey across Japan, blending traditional picaresque tropes with the rebellious school-life aesthetic that was popular in late-1980s manga.

The animation design reflects the stylized, vibrant character work characteristic of J.C.Staff’s early output during their formative years. The adaptation was directed by Masami Hata and aimed to capture the slapstick energy of Satonaka’s source material while showcasing the technical fluidity that studios were increasingly exploring for the direct-to-video market at the time. While it remains a niche entry in the studio's extensive catalog, it serves as an interesting artifact of the late 80s trend of adapting historical Japanese literature into contemporary high-concept anime.
