Yama no Susume: Second Season Specials

Yama no Susume: Second Season, also known as Encouragement of Climb, was produced by studio 8-bit in 2014 to accompany the expansion of the franchise into a full-length series. These special episodes were designed to complement the main narrative, which follows the shy Aoi and her adventurous friend Hinata as they rekindle their childhood bond through mountaineering. The project aimed to capture the tranquil, therapeutic essence of the hobby while maintaining the soft, pastel-hued aesthetic that defined the show’s unique visual identity.

The character designs were handled by Yusuke Matsuo, who sought to translate Shiro’s original manga art style into a fluid animation format that emphasized gentle atmosphere and natural beauty. The specials served as essential world-building exercises, allowing for quieter, character-focused vignettes that were well-received by fans for their sincerity and relaxing tone. By focusing on the personal growth of the protagonists against the backdrop of Japan’s scenic peaks, the creative team successfully deepened the emotional connection between the audience and the characters.
