Where it came from
Yamatarou Kaeru was produced by Tezuka Productions in 1986 as an original video animation, serving as an adaptation of Osamu Tezuka’s original manga work. The project emerged during the mid-eighties transition period for the studio, which was increasingly exploring the direct-to-video market to experiment with narrative styles that were less constrained by the rigorous standards of television broadcasting.
The animation reflects the distinct, simplified aesthetic characteristic of Tezuka’s later career, emphasizing expressive character silhouettes and whimsical storytelling. Designed as a lighthearted fantasy, the production sought to capture the charm of Tezuka’s moral fables, though it remains a niche entry in his vast filmography, largely appreciated by scholars of his late-period output for its fidelity to his evolving illustrative hand.
