While going deeper into the woods one day, primary school student Keita Amano ('Nate' in the English localisation) notices a bizarre capsule toy machine who tells him to insert money which he obeyingly does. But after opening the capsule that came out, a ghostly creature named Whisper materialises. Whisper, who was sealed inside the capsule, rewards his liberator Keita by becoming his Yo-kai butler and gives him a Yo-kai Watch. Whoever wears the watch gains the ability to see supernatural creatures called Yo-kai, each type possessing different kinds of magical abilities, and which are normally invisible to humans. The Yo-kai Watch also allows the wearer to summon any Yo-kai they have befriended, enabling the wearer to make use of the Yo-kai's powers. Using it, Keita and Whisper encounter many mischievous Yo-kai around town, resolving the trouble they're causing and befriending many at the same time.

Where it came from
The Yo-kai Watch television series was produced by the animation studio OLM and debuted in Japan in 2014. It was created as a multimedia franchise by Level-5, intended to capitalize on the popularity of their concurrent Nintendo 3DS game of the same name. The series focuses on Nate Adams, a young boy who discovers a special watch that allows him to see and befriend Yo-kai, creatures derived from Japanese folklore that influence human emotions and behaviors.
The series design is characterized by a blend of whimsical creature design and relatable suburban humor, drawing inspiration from various tropes found in the monster-collecting genre. The animation style is vibrant and fast-paced, designed to appeal to school-aged children while embedding cultural nuances of Japanese mythology. Upon its release, it became a significant cultural phenomenon in Japan, leading to extensive merchandise lines and eventually an international expansion that solidified its place in the landscape of 2010s children's entertainment.
