Yokohama Bakkure Tai

Released in 1997, Yokohama Bakkure Tai is an original video animation produced by Toei Animation. It emerged during a period when the studio was exploring direct-to-video markets, leaning into a gritty, urban aesthetic that contrasted with their long-running television serials. The narrative focuses on the lives of troubled youth in Yokohama, attempting to capture the angst and social alienation prevalent in Japanese underground subcultures of the mid-1990s.

The production was helmed by a team aiming for a realistic, somewhat abrasive style that prioritized atmospheric storytelling over traditional animation polish. While it served as a niche title within Toei's expansive library, it is frequently cited by enthusiasts of 1990s OVA culture for its distinct regional setting and its attempt to ground supernatural or dramatic tropes in the harsh reality of port-city life. It received a modest release and maintains a cult status among collectors interested in the experimental era of late-twentieth-century anime.
