Where it came from
The 1991 animated series Yokoyama Mitsuteru Sangokushi was produced by TV Tokyo to adapt the expansive manga epic by Mitsuteru Yokoyama, which itself was based on the classic 14th-century Chinese historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. The series was created to bring the complex political and military power struggles of the late Han Dynasty and the Three Kingdoms period to a television audience, utilizing a serious, historical tone that distinguished it from more fantastical anime interpretations of the era.
Mitsuteru Yokoyama, a titan of the manga industry, oversaw the visual foundation of the project, ensuring the character designs reflected his meticulous, character-driven narrative style. The production was well-received for its faithfulness to the source material, providing a comprehensive and methodical retelling of the epic that remains a touchstone for fans of historical anime, praised specifically for its dedication to the strategic depth of the original literary work.
