Where it came from
Yonimo Osoroshii Nihon Mukashibanashi, or Tales of Terror from Old Japan, emerged from the early 1990s Japanese direct-to-video market. Produced by Toei Video, the series was designed to revisit traditional Japanese folklore through a distinctively dark and macabre lens, stripping away the sanitized, child-friendly veneer often applied to these cultural staples to reveal the grim, cautionary roots of the original oral traditions.
The production utilized a style reminiscent of classic folk illustration, intentionally clashing with the unsettling, often gory themes of the narratives. This stylistic choice aimed to evoke the uncanny feeling of a dark fairy tale. Upon its release, the OVA was received as a niche curiosity, recognized primarily by fans of horror anthology anime for its uncompromising commitment to depicting the brutal outcomes inherent in the source material.
