Where it came from
You Don't Know Gunma Yet, or Omae wa Mada Gunma o Shiranai, originated as a digital manga series by Hiroto Wada, which gained significant traction for its humorous exploration of the regional identity and stereotypes surrounding Gunma Prefecture. Published on the Kurage Bunch website, the work serves as a comedic travelogue and social commentary, focusing on a protagonist who transfers to the region only to find himself immersed in local lore and peculiar cultural habits that baffle outsiders.
The 2018 television series adaptation was produced by Asahi Production under the direction of Mankyū, a filmmaker known for his work on short-form comedic anime. The production aimed to distill the manga's rapid-fire jokes and local historical references into a bite-sized format, utilizing a distinct, minimalist aesthetic that prioritizes dialogue and reaction shots. Upon its release, the series was received as a niche but effective tribute to regional Japanese pride, appreciated primarily for its ability to transform bureaucratic and geographical trivia into approachable entertainment.
