Where it came from
Youkaiden Nekome Kozou was produced by Wako Production and first aired in 1976. The series serves as an adaptation of the manga by Kazuo Umezu, a master of Japanese horror comics known for his ability to blend unsettling supernatural themes with eccentric, often grotesque visual motifs. The show centers on a cat-eyed boy navigating a world of yōkai and folklore, reflecting the mid-1970s fascination with supernatural storytelling in Japanese television.
The character design captures the distinct, high-contrast aesthetic of Umezu's illustrative style, emphasizing dramatic expressions and eerie atmospheric settings. While it remains a niche entry in the landscape of vintage anime, it is regarded by enthusiasts of classic horror animation as a significant example of the medium's experimental period, where studios frequently adapted dark manga for television audiences seeking darker, more mature genre fare.
