Where it came from
Yowamushi Pedal: SPECIAL RIDE was released in 2013 as an original video animation that serves as a prologue to the long-running sports anime series adapted from Wataru Watanabe's manga. Produced by TMS Entertainment and distributed by Toho, the episode was bundled with the limited edition volume of the original manga to build anticipation for the television series broadcast later that year.
The animation features character designs by Takahiko Yoshida, who sought to translate Watanabe's distinct, energetic art style into a fluid format suitable for competitive cycling sequences. The project was received as a faithful introduction to the series, focusing on the character development of Sakamichi Onoda and establishing the high-stakes, camaraderie-focused tone that defined the success of the broader Yowamushi Pedal franchise.
