Set six months after the events of the original Yu-Gi-Oh! manga, Yugi Muto and his friends are in their final year of high school and are talking about what they will do in the future. Meanwhile, Seto Kaiba has commissioned an excavation to retrieve the disassembled Millennium Puzzle from the ruins of the Millennium chamber. The item had previously housed the soul of his rival, Atem, whom he hopes to revive in order to settle their score. The excavation is interrupted by a mysterious man, who faces Kaiba in a game of Duel Monsters and steals two pieces of the recovered Puzzle. What is his ulterior motive? The stakes have never been higher; the rivalries never as fierce; the risks never so great.

Where it came from
Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Dark Side of Dimensions was produced by Studio Dice and released in 2016 to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga series. It serves as a canonical sequel to the original manga, picking up after the conclusion of the Pharaoh's journey. Kazuki Takahashi, the creator of the franchise, was heavily involved in the production, serving as the executive producer, character designer, and screenwriter to ensure the story remained faithful to his original vision.
The film represents a high-water mark for the franchise's animation, utilizing a blend of traditional 2D animation and computer-generated imagery to update the series' signature card battles for a modern cinematic audience. Takahashi sought to explore the lasting psychological impact of the Pharaoh’s departure on Seto Kaiba, centering the narrative on Kaiba's obsession with reuniting with his rival. The film was well-received by the existing fan base, who appreciated the deepened character studies and the technical polish applied to the series' iconic aesthetic.
