The story takes place in the near future in a city called Heartland. Tsukumo Yuma is a young duelist who strives to become the Duel Monsters champion, despite being an amateur. One day, during a duel with a school bully, a mysterious spirit called Astral appears before Yuma, and helps him to win. Astral then explains to Yuma that he is searching for his lost memories, which have been transformed into 99 "Xyz Monster" cards called "Numbers" and have been scattered across the globe. The "Numbers" have the ability to possess the duelists who own them and bring out their darkest desires. In order to recover his memories, and collect the "Numbers" cards, Astral teams up with Yuma.

Where it came from
Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal premiered in 2011 as the third primary spin-off in the long-running Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise, produced by Studio Gallop and broadcast by TV Tokyo. The series was designed to revitalize the property for a new generation by introducing the Xyz Summoning mechanic, which allowed players to stack monsters of the same level to summon powerful Xyz Monsters. This mechanical shift was reflected in the show’s high-energy visual style and a narrative centered on the partnership between the spirited protagonist Yuma Tsukumo and the amnesiac astral being, Astral.
The production team aimed to shift the tone toward a more optimistic and fast-paced adventure compared to its predecessors. Satoshi Kuwahara directed the series, guiding a creative effort that sought to blend futuristic sci-fi motifs with the franchise's traditional card-battle foundation. While the series initially faced criticism from older segments of the fanbase for its perceived departure from the darker atmosphere of the original series, it became well-regarded for its significant character development and the emotional stakes surrounding the collection of the Numbers cards.
