Where it came from
Released in 2018 to commemorate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Yu Yu Hakusho anime, these OVAs were produced by Studio Pierrot, the original animation house behind the series. The project was intended as a nostalgic bridge for long-time fans, adapting two distinct stories: 'Two Shots', a prequel manga side-story depicting the first meeting of Kurama and Hiei, and 'All or Nothing', which concludes the manga’s narrative arc regarding the Spirit World's political turmoil.
The animation direction sought to modernize the aesthetic of the 1990s original while maintaining the familiar character designs that defined the series. Under the direction of Noriyuki Abe, who returned from the original television run, the production team aimed to capture the grit and supernatural flair of the source material created by Yoshihiro Togashi. The project received a warm reception from the dedicated fanbase, who viewed the release as a rare and meaningful post-script to the beloved franchise.
