Where it came from
The Washio Sumi Chapter serves as a prequel to the original 2014 Yuki Yuna is a Hero series, produced by Studio Gokumi and released in 2017. Originally conceived as a theatrical film trilogy, it was later re-edited and broadcast as the first six episodes of the franchise's second season to expand upon the backstory of the Hero Club’s predecessors.
The narrative focuses on the childhood of Sumi Washio and her fellow candidates, exploring the darker, more foundational elements of the series' magical girl lore. Directed by Seiji Kishi and character-designed by BUNBUN, the project sought to maintain the visual continuity and thematic balance between pastoral slice-of-life elements and the high-stakes, tragic cost of the characters' duties to the Shinju.
