Where it came from
Yuki Yuna is a Hero, or Yuki Yuna wa Yusha de Aru, was released in 2014 as an original anime television series produced by Studio Gokumi. The project emerged during a period of experimentation within the magical girl genre, aiming to subvert traditional tropes by integrating elements of psychological thriller and dark fantasy into a narrative about middle school students tasked with defending their world.
The series was directed by Seiji Kishi and featured character designs by BUNBUN, whose work helped establish the show's distinct aesthetic blend of domestic slice-of-life charm and high-stakes supernatural combat. Upon its release, the show was noted by critics for its balance of lighthearted character interactions and the heavy, often harrowing consequences faced by its protagonists, earning a dedicated following that led to the subsequent expansion of the franchise through prequels and sequels.
