Where it came from
Yukiusagi, or the Snow Rabbit, serves as a prominent mascot within the NHK broadcasting ecosystem. Created as a seasonal and cultural symbol, the character embodies the Japanese tradition of yukiusagi, small figures sculpted from fresh snow. The design intentionally leans into minimalism and gentle aesthetics, reflecting NHK's focus on creating approachable, family-friendly branding that resonates with viewers across different generations during the winter months.
The character was developed to bridge the gap between traditional folklore and modern television identity. By utilizing simple, rounded shapes and a soft color palette, the designers sought to evoke a sense of quiet tranquility and winter joy. Over the years, the mascot has been featured in various network interstitials and promotional materials, generally receiving appreciation for its understated charm and its ability to represent the network’s commitment to culturally grounded, public-service broadcasting.
