Where it came from
Yume wo Kanaeru Zou, or The Elephant Who Grants Wishes, originated as a wildly popular 2007 self-help novel by Keiya Mizuno, which framed personal development lessons through the lens of a humorous, beer-drinking Hindu deity named Ganesha. Due to the book's massive success in Japan, it was adapted into this 2009 anime series by Studio DEEN, intended to expand the reach of the original's comedic and philosophical narrative for a television audience.
The character design for the anime series sought to balance the mythological roots of Ganesha with the approachable, cynical persona established in Mizuno’s prose. By utilizing Studio DEEN's established animation style, the production aimed to soften the didactic nature of the source material's self-improvement themes, resulting in a project that was received primarily as a cultural curiosity that bridged the gap between inspirational literature and episodic animation.
