Yuugen Kaisha: Jiken File 00 - Hajimari wa Ayashiku mo Hanayaka ni

Yuugen Kaisha, known internationally as Phantom Quest Corp, began as an original video animation series produced by Madhouse in 1994. This specific entry, Jiken File 00, serves as a thematic prologue or special episode that introduces the protagonist, Ayaka Kisaragi, and her paranormal investigation agency. It was designed to establish a vibrant, urban fantasy atmosphere that blended supernatural mystery with a distinctly colorful, high-energy 1990s aesthetic common to the studio's output during that era.

The character designs were crafted by Toshihiro Kawamoto, who sought to balance the gritty nature of ghost hunting with a charismatic, fashionable lead. The series was met with moderate interest for its unique blend of comedy and occult tropes, setting the tone for the full episodes that followed. By leaning into a stylistic, almost film-noir-inspired presentation, the team created a visual identity that captured the experimental spirit of the mid-90s direct-to-video market in Japan.
