Yuukan Club

Yuukan Club was produced as a two-episode original video animation by studio Magic Bus in 1991, adapting the long-running shōjo manga series created by Yukari Ichijo. The story follows six wealthy, eccentric high school students at an elite private academy who use their immense resources and leisure time to solve mysteries and navigate social escapades. The production emerged during a period when high-budget OVAs were a popular medium for translating complex manga narratives to the screen, focusing on the refined, opulent aesthetic associated with the original source material.

The character designs for the animation sought to translate Ichijo’s distinct, stylized art into a fluid, late-80s and early-90s anime aesthetic. The project aimed to capture the flamboyant personalities and comedic timing of the original cast, which had gained significant cultural traction in Japan for its subversion of traditional school-life tropes. While the anime adaptation was viewed as a faithful, if brief, snapshot of the manga's expansive charm, the series remains best known for its enduring legacy as a seminal work in the school-mystery genre.
