Nozomu Itoshiki is still the bizarre teacher of the even stranger Class 2-H. He attempts to teach his students the negative aspects of the world and society, only to have each circumstance thrown at his face whenever he tries. With more students and friends than before, Zetsubo-sensei's life becomes harder and crazier than ever before.

Where it came from
Zan Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei serves as the third television adaptation of Koji Kumeta's dark satirical manga. Produced by studio Shaft and directed by Akiyuki Shinbo in 2009, this season continued the series' exploration of neurotic social commentary, focusing on the relentlessly pessimistic teacher Nozomu Itoshiki. The project emerged during a period of high creative output for the studio, maintaining the distinctive, surrealist aesthetic that defined the franchise.
The visual design of the series is heavily characterized by the signature style of Shaft, featuring sharp angles, frequent text overlays, and a minimalist color palette that emphasizes the chaotic nature of the characters' lives. The animation direction sought to translate the manga's panel-heavy storytelling into a rhythmic, highly stylized visual language. Upon release, it was well-received by fans of the previous seasons for its ability to balance absurd comedy with biting critiques of contemporary Japanese culture.
