Where it came from
Zone of the Enders: 2167 Idolo was produced by Sunrise and released in 2001 as a direct prequel to the PlayStation 2 video game Zone of the Enders. The project was conceived to flesh out the lore of the Orbital Frame universe, specifically detailing the creation of the titular Idolo frame and the conflict between Earth and the Mars colonies. It serves as a stylistic bridge between the high-octane mecha action of the game and a more grounded, narrative-driven exploration of the political tensions within the series.
The OVA was directed by Tetsuaki Watanabe, with mechanical designs by Yoji Shinkawa, whose distinctively angular and industrial aesthetic became the visual hallmark of the entire franchise. Shinkawa, already renowned for his work on the Metal Gear Solid series, leaned into a functional, militaristic design language that emphasized the 'Orbital Frame' as a sophisticated, almost organic piece of technology. Upon release, it was received as a competent companion piece that provided essential context for players, though it remained largely restricted to the dedicated fan base of the game series.
