Zoids

Zoids, the 1999 television series produced by studio Xebec, was created to revitalize the Zoids model kit franchise originally launched by Tomy in the 1980s. Following a period of waning interest in the mechanical animal toys, the series introduced a new generation of viewers to the world of Planet Zi, combining cel animation with early computer-generated imagery to depict the intricate movements of the robotic creatures. The show's success successfully bridged the gap between toy marketing and narrative-driven anime, prompting a global expansion of the brand.

The series was directed by Takao Kato, who focused on crafting a compelling war-themed narrative centered on the young protagonist Van Flyheight and his bond with his Zoid, Zeke. The character designs were handled by Tadashi Hiramatsu, who emphasized a distinct aesthetic that balanced the organic shapes of the animal-inspired machines with the sharper, utilitarian designs of the human characters. Upon its release, the series was well-received for its ambitious production values and served as a cornerstone of the late nineties 'toyetic' anime movement, ultimately influencing a decade of subsequent mecha series.
