Where it came from
Zombie Land Saga was produced by Studio MAPPA in 2018 as an original television anime series, conceived as a subversion of the idol genre. By blending the conventions of musical anime with supernatural horror and dark comedy, the creators sought to explore themes of resilience and second chances through a group of undead girls resurrected to revitalize the Saga Prefecture of Japan.
The series was directed by Munehisa Sakai, who aimed to balance high-energy concert sequences with the absurd premise of zombified protagonists attempting to hide their condition from the public. Upon release, the show was well-received for its unexpected emotional depth and its innovative approach to regional promotion, ultimately serving as a successful cultural campaign for the actual Saga Prefecture.
