Where it came from
Zoku Owarimonogatari was produced by Studio Shaft in 2019 as a six-episode original video animation series, serving as an epilogue to the expansive Monogatari series based on the light novels by Nisio Isin. The project was directed by Akiyuki Shinbo, who has defined the franchise's visual identity since its inception. By focusing on the protagonist Koyomi Araragi as he enters a mirrored world, the work allowed the studio to lean into its signature surrealist aesthetic, using rapid-fire editing, stark color palettes, and abstract background designs to mirror the internal psychological states of the characters.
The animation was initially released as a theatrical event in Japan before arriving as an OVA series. It was received by fans as a reflective conclusion to the high school narrative arc of the series, drawing praise for its experimental visual direction that pushed the boundaries of standard television anime. The design choices, characterized by the recurring motif of mirrors and distorted architecture, were intended to visually represent the fragility of Araragi's perception of reality during his final transitionary phase before adulthood.
