Years ago, interdimensional gates opened across our world, allowing beings from five warring dimensions to expand their battles to the Earth. Now, though, the Z/X and mankind are settling into an uneasy peace and some humans are entering into pacts with the interdimensional newcomers. For one young woman this is a simple choice: Azumi Kakamigahara can sign a pact with the beautiful Z/X known as Rigel, or succumb to the disease that has left her comatose for much of her life.
What Azumi doesn’t expect is that it means moving to a new Academy where teams of young women and their Z/X partners are being secretly trained to face the next wave of hostile attackers… and no sooner have Azumi and her new friends arrived than the enemy launches its first attack on their school.

Where it came from
Z/X: Code Reunion was produced by studio Passione and released in 2019 as a television anime adaptation of the long-running Z/X Zillions of enemy X trading card game. The series was developed to expand the franchise's multimedia presence, focusing on a narrative set within the Fujimi Academy, where students are tasked with piloting mysterious devices known as Z/X to navigate a world fractured by interdimensional portals. It served as a companion project to the existing card game lore, aiming to translate the card-based combat mechanics into a coherent high-school-centric fantasy setting.
The character designs for the anime were handled by Junko Kohara, who worked to adapt the illustrative style of the various card artists into a unified visual identity suitable for television animation. The series was directed by Yoshifumi Sueda, with an emphasis on balancing the high-stakes conflict of the card game's source material with the tropes of the slice-of-life genre. Upon release, the show was primarily recognized by fans of the trading card game as a functional extension of the brand, receiving modest attention for its integration of promotional card mechanics into the show's episodic structure.
