Akohekohe

The Akohekohe, or Palmeria dolei, is a member of the Hawaiian honeycreeper family, a group of birds that evolved from a single colonizing finch ancestor into an extraordinary array of specialized forms. Found exclusively on the island of Maui, this species is defined by its striking orange-red plumage and the prominent white crest of feathers atop its head. Historically, the species was widespread across Maui and Molokai, but habitat loss and the introduction of avian diseases brought by non-native mosquitoes severely restricted its range to the high-elevation rainforests of the Haleakala slopes.

The bird’s specialized morphology, characterized by rounded wings and a pointed tail, reflects its adaptation to the dense, multi-layered canopy of the Hawaiian montane forest. Ornithologists and evolutionary biologists have long studied the Akohekohe as a prime example of island speciation and ecological niche partitioning. Named in honor of the naturalist Sanford Dole, the bird is a primary focus of ongoing conservation efforts intended to mitigate the impacts of climate change and feral ungulates on its fragile native ecosystem.
