Alagoas Antwren

The Alagoas Antwren, scientifically classified as Myrmotherula snowi, is a critically endangered bird species endemic to a tiny sliver of the Atlantic Forest in northeastern Brazil. It was formally described in 1988, having been overlooked by ornithologists for decades due to its restricted range and preference for the mid-level canopy of humid primary forests. Its emergence into the scientific record came during a period of heightened international concern regarding the rapid habitat fragmentation in the Alagoas state, highlighting the urgent need for conservation efforts in one of the world's most threatened biomes.
