Altai Snowcock

The Altai snowcock, Tetraogallus altaicus, was formally described by Gebler in 1836, representing a member of the pheasant family native to the high-altitude mountain ranges of the Altai and Sayan mountains. Adapted for the extreme environment of the Central Asian steppes, the species evolved its signature broad wings and rounded tail to navigate the steep, rocky slopes and alpine meadows where it spends its life foraging for vegetation.

The physical characteristics of the bird reflect a specialized evolution for survival in thin mountain air, with a plumage pattern that acts as effective camouflage against craggy, high-elevation terrain. Ornithological documentation of the species emerged during the 19th-century explorations of the Russian Empire, where naturalists cataloged the bird as a robust, terrestrial galliform that prefers to walk or glide downward rather than take flight upward, a behavioral trait consistent with its robust, ground-dwelling anatomy.
