Tibetan Eared-Pheasant

The Tibetan Eared-Pheasant, Crossoptilon harmani, is a member of the family Phasianidae, native to the high-altitude shrublands and coniferous forests of southeastern Tibet. It was formally described by the ornithologist Richard Meinertzhagen in 1926, named in honor of the British political officer Major J.L.R. Harman. The species is characterized by its distinctive appearance, including a white, ear-like tuft of feathers extending from the sides of its face, a dark crown, and a long, loose, greyish-white tail.

Evolutionarily, the bird's rounded wing shape is an adaptation to its life in dense, mountainous undergrowth, allowing for short, sudden bursts of flight to escape predators rather than sustained long-distance travel. In the history of avian study, it is often viewed as a testament to the specialized biodiversity of the Tibetan Plateau. While it has been documented in various scientific journals and museum collections since the early 20th century, its elusive nature in the wild has kept it a subject of fascination for ornithologists and conservationists focused on highland ecosystems.
