Andaman Flowerpecker

The Andaman Flowerpecker was first formally described by the ornithologist Allan Octavian Hume in 1873. As an endemic species restricted to the Andaman Islands in the Bay of Bengal, the bird evolved in isolation, leading to its distinct morphology and specialized ecological niche within the archipelago's forest canopy. Its classification has historically been a subject of taxonomic discussion, with some scholars debating its relationship to the Pale-billed Flowerpecker, though it is now widely recognized as a separate entity due to its specific geographical range and physical characteristics.

The bird's design reflects its adaptation to a nectar-based diet, featuring a relatively short, stout bill and the signature rounded wings and notched tail that define its swift, darting flight patterns. These traits are highly functional, allowing it to navigate the dense foliage of the Andaman tropical forests. While it lacks the vibrant plumage of some of its cousins, its subtle coloration provides necessary camouflage against the canopy, a hallmark of evolutionary survival in a geographically confined habitat.
