Andean Pygmy-Owl

The Andean Pygmy-Owl, scientifically classified as Glaucidium jardinii, is a small, elusive strigid native to the humid montane forests of the Andes. First described by ornithologist Charles Lucien Bonaparte in the mid-19th century, this species evolved to thrive in high-altitude ecosystems ranging from Venezuela to Peru. Its distinct morphology, characterized by rounded wings and a rounded tail, is an evolutionary adaptation that facilitates maneuverability within the dense, cluttered understory of its cloud forest habitat.

Unlike many of its relatives, the Andean Pygmy-Owl is primarily diurnal or crepuscular, a trait that has made it a subject of significant interest for ornithologists and field researchers. Its design—small stature, dense plumage, and specialized flight profile—reflects a highly efficient predator niche.
