Antillean Palm Swift

The Antillean Palm Swift, Tachornis phoenicobia, is an avian species native to the Greater Antilles, primarily inhabiting Cuba, Jamaica, and Hispaniola. It evolved within the tropical ecosystem to specialize in foraging while in continuous flight, a characteristic common to the swift family. Its distinctively pointed wings and notched tail are evolutionary adaptations designed for high-speed maneuverability, allowing the bird to navigate around palm groves where it characteristically builds its nests.

First formally described by naturalist Philip Henry Gosse in the mid-19th century, the bird is a product of the unique Caribbean biodiversity that captivated Victorian-era ornithologists. The swift's nesting habits, which often involve using the underside of palm fronds, have made it a subject of interest in avian architecture studies. It remains a stable, if elusive, representative of its genus, recognized by its rapid, darting flight patterns and preference for human-altered landscapes where palm trees are abundant.
