Antillean Piculet

The Antillean Piculet, Nesoctites micromegas, is a unique avian species endemic to the island of Hispaniola. As the only extant member of its genus, it occupies a distinct evolutionary niche within the Picidae family. It was first formally described by the German naturalist Carl Jakob Sundevall in 1866, based on specimens collected in the Caribbean region. Its classification reflects the broader biogeographic study of West Indian birds during the 19th century, serving as a significant subject for ornithologists examining the diversification of woodpeckers in isolated island environments.
