Archbold's Nightjar

Archbold's Nightjar was formally described by the ornithologist Austin L. Rand in 1937, named in honor of the explorer Richard Archbold. It was discovered during the Archbold Expedition to the Snow Mountains of New Guinea, a region characterized by its rugged and isolated high-altitude terrain. The bird was classified within the genus Eurostopodus, distinguishing it by its specific morphology and restricted geographic range in the montane forests of the central cordillera.

The species is distinguished by a broad, rounded wing shape and a rounded tail, features that facilitate its movement through dense, high-elevation environments. Unlike many of its relatives, the Archbold's Nightjar is notoriously elusive, often identified more by its distinct vocalizations than by direct observation. Its design reflects an evolutionary specialization for nocturnal foraging in cold, high-altitude climates, and it remains a prized, if seldom seen, subject for ornithologists focused on the biodiversity of New Guinea.
