Asian Green Bee-eater

The Asian Green Bee-eater, Merops orientalis, is a widespread member of the Meropidae family, naturally occurring across a vast range from Sub-Saharan Africa through the Middle East and into Southeast Asia. These birds are defined by their vibrant emerald-green plumage, characteristic black eye-stripe, and elongated, slightly forked tail feathers. Evolutionarily, their morphology is optimized for an aerial lifestyle; the pointed wing shape provides the high-speed maneuverability required to capture insects mid-flight.

First formally described by ornithologist John Latham in 1801, the species reflects the diverse ecological adaptations found within the Bee-eater genus. They are recognized for their social behavior and preference for open woodland or agricultural clearings, where they utilize exposed perches to hunt. The design of their plumage and the specialized shape of their beaks serve as primary examples of selective evolutionary pressure, favoring birds capable of efficient foraging in insect-rich subtropical environments.
