Atitlan Grebe

The Atitlan Grebe, or Podilymbus gigas, was a flightless bird endemic to Lake Atitlán in the highlands of Guatemala. Evolving from the Pied-billed Grebe, it developed a distinct morphology adapted to its high-altitude environment, featuring broad wings and a pointed tail that were suited more for underwater propulsion than aerial migration. Its specialized existence in the volcanic crater lake made it a singular example of island-style speciation, though this isolation ultimately rendered the population fragile.

The decline of the species became a focal point for international conservation efforts in the mid-20th century. Introduced non-native fish species, which competed for food and preyed upon the grebe's young, coupled with fluctuating water levels, precipitated its extinction. Despite intervention by ornithologists like Anne LaBastille, who spent years documenting the birds, the species was officially declared extinct by the late 1980s, serving as a sobering case study in the impact of invasive species on endemic wildlife.
