Asir Magpie

The Asir magpie (Pica asirensis) is a distinct species of bird endemic to the Asir Province in southwestern Saudi Arabia. It was long considered a subspecies of the Eurasian magpie, but modern taxonomic studies, particularly those focusing on its unique plumage and vocalizations, have elevated it to full species status. It is a highly specialized resident of the high-altitude juniper forests, an ecosystem that has become increasingly fragmented, leading to the bird's classification as critically endangered.
