Audouin's Gull

Audouin's gull was first described by the French naturalist Charles Payraudeau in 1826, who named the species in honor of the French entomologist and ornithologist Jean Victor Audouin. For much of the 20th century, the species was considered one of the rarest gulls in the world, with a population that plummeted due to habitat loss and disturbance in its Mediterranean breeding grounds. It is a migratory species that primarily nests on rocky islands, and its status as a flagship species for Mediterranean conservation has been a focal point for international ornithological research.

The bird is distinguished by its slender build, pointed wings, and a characteristic notched tail, which facilitate its specialized hunting behavior of surface-feeding on small pelagic fish. Ornithologists often highlight its evolution as a highly selective breeder compared to the more opportunistic and widespread yellow-legged gull. Because of its specific environmental requirements and historical population bottlenecks, the species has been the subject of extensive protective efforts, notably the establishment of protected nesting colonies across the Balearic Islands and other Mediterranean coastal sanctuaries.
