Sooty Gull

The Sooty Gull, known scientifically as Ichthyaetus hemprichii, is a medium-sized gull primarily distributed across the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, and the western Indian Ocean. Evolutionarily adapted to the harsh, arid climates of the coastal Middle East and East Africa, this species evolved its characteristic dark, sooty plumage as a functional adaptation to survive in high-glare environments. It was formally described by the German naturalist Carl Friedrich Bruch in 1853, who categorized it within the broader family of Laridae, reflecting the scientific community's late 19th-century effort to map the avian biodiversity of the Arabian Peninsula.

The bird's distinct physical traits, including its notably pointed wings and subtly notched tail, represent an aerodynamic specialization for long-distance maritime foraging. Ornithologists often note that its appearance—characterized by a dark grey-brown head and mantle—stands in stark contrast to the white-headed gulls common to more temperate regions.
