The Australian Owlet-nightjar, Aegotheles cristatus, is the most widespread member of the Aegothelidae family, an ancient lineage of nocturnal birds that occupies a distinct evolutionary position between swifts and nightjars. It was formally described by the naturalist John Latham in 1790, reflecting the intense period of European biological exploration in Australia.
