Azure-breasted Pitta

The Azure-breasted Pitta, scientifically classified as Pitta steerii, is an elusive avian species endemic to the Philippines. It was first described in the late 19th century and named in honor of Joseph Beal Steere, an American zoologist and naturalist who conducted extensive expeditions across the Philippine archipelago between 1870 and 1875. As a member of the Pittidae family, it occupies a distinct niche in the dense, lowland forests of regions such as Samar, Leyte, and Bohol.

The bird's design is defined by its compact, terrestrial morphology, characterized by rounded wings and a short, rounded tail that assist in maneuvering through thick undergrowth. Its plumage features a vibrant azure patch across its breast, set against a dark throat and belly, which serves as a notable field mark for researchers. Due to severe habitat fragmentation and deforestation within its limited range, the species is currently classified as vulnerable, making it a subject of significant conservation interest among ornithologists and bird enthusiasts who document its behavior in its shrinking natural habitat.
