Bahama Mockingbird

The Bahama Mockingbird was formally described by the Cuban naturalist Juan Gundlach in 1863, taking its scientific name, Mimus gundlachii, in his honor. This species is native to the Bahama Archipelago and certain cays off the north coast of Cuba, occupying a specific ecological niche in dry scrublands. Its classification within the Mimidae family aligns it with the Northern Mockingbird, though it is notably more elusive and tends to inhabit denser, more secluded thickets, which has historically made it a prized subject for field ornithologists studying the biogeography of the Caribbean islands.
