Band-tailed Nighthawk

The Band-tailed Nighthawk, or Nyctiprogne leucopyga, is a species of nightjar in the family Caprimulgidae. Found across the Amazon basin and parts of South America, it evolved within the specific ecological niche of riverine habitats and forest edges. Its nomenclature and classification were formalized during the era of nineteenth-century ornithological expeditions, which sought to catalogue the vast biodiversity of the Neotropics.

The physical characteristics of this bird, including its distinctively pointed wings and notched tail, reflect its evolutionary adaptation for agile, insectivorous flight at dusk and dawn.
