Square-tailed Nightjar

The Square-tailed Nightjar, Caprimulgus fossii, is a nocturnal bird species native to the southern and eastern regions of Africa. It was scientifically described by German naturalist Gustav Hartlaub in 1857. As an insectivore adapted to the twilight, its physical traits—such as the characteristic rounded wings and squared tail—evolved to facilitate agile, silent flight during its crepuscular hunting hours. The bird is typically found in savanna, woodland, and scrub habitats, where its mottled plumage provides essential camouflage against the forest floor during the daylight hours.
