Banded Ground-Cuckoo

The Banded Ground-Cuckoo, known scientifically as Neomorphus radiolosus, is a rare and elusive member of the cuckoo family restricted to the humid forests of the Chocó region in Colombia and Ecuador. First formally described in the late 19th century, this species evolved to occupy the dense, dark understory of lowland forests. Its physical characteristics, including its characteristically rounded wings and remarkably long, graduated tail, are specialized adaptations that facilitate silent, low-level flight and agile navigation through complex forest floor vegetation.

The species is widely considered a holy grail for ornithologists and bird enthusiasts due to its secretive nature and the ongoing fragmentation of its natural habitat. Its distinct aesthetic—defined by its dark plumage, banded appearance, and striking facial skin—was shaped by evolutionary pressures to remain camouflaged within the shadows of the canopy. While it was once considered a mysterious taxonomic entity, modern field researchers have worked to document its behavior, confirming its role as a specialized ground-dweller that frequently associates with army ant swarms to forage for insects flushed out by the ants.
