Hodgson's Hawk-Cuckoo

The Hodgson's Hawk-Cuckoo, scientifically classified as Hierococcyx nisicolor, was first described by the naturalist Edward Blyth in 1843. It belongs to the broader Cuculidae family, a group of birds known for their distinct vocalizations and complex reproductive strategies. The species is named after Brian Houghton Hodgson, a British diplomat and polymath who made significant contributions to the study of Himalayan ornithology during his tenure in Nepal in the mid-19th century.

The bird is characterized by its pointed wings and elongated, graduated tail, features that have evolved to support its rapid, maneuverable flight through the dense canopies of its native habitats in Southeast Asia and parts of the Himalayas. These physical attributes are critical for its survival as a brood parasite, a behavioral adaptation where the species lays its eggs in the nests of other birds. The design of its plumage, which often mimics the appearance of certain hawks, is widely considered by biologists to be a form of Batesian mimicry that allows the cuckoo to approach host nests with less resistance from the parent birds.
