Bar-shouldered Dove

The Bar-shouldered Dove, Geopelia humeralis, is a species native to the coastal regions and wooded habitats of northern and eastern Australia and southern New Guinea. It is distinguished by the distinctive copper-bronze feathers on its shoulders, a feature that provides its common name and serves as a primary identifier for field ornithologists. Unlike migratory species, these birds are largely sedentary, residing in mangroves, scrublands, and riparian zones where they forage for seeds and small fruits on the ground.

First formally described by the naturalist Coenraad Jacob Temminck in 1821, the bird is a member of the Columbidae family. Its biological design, characterized by a rounded wing shape and a square tail, facilitates short, agile bursts of flight through dense coastal foliage. Ornithological documentation from the nineteenth century often highlighted its resonant, repeated call, which distinguishes it from the related Peaceful Dove and Zebra Dove, establishing it as a well-recognized element of the avian landscape within its endemic range.
