Bar-tailed Treecreeper

The Bar-tailed Treecreeper, Certhia himalayana, is a passerine bird native to the temperate forests of the Himalayas and surrounding mountain ranges. First described by Nicholas Aylward Vigors in 1832, the species evolved within the dense, high-altitude woodlands where its specialized morphology—specifically its stiff, pointed tail and narrow, curved bill—allows it to navigate tree trunks with precision. These adaptations enable the bird to forage for small insects and spiders hidden in the bark crevices of pine and oak trees, a niche that has sustained its population across the mountainous regions of South and Central Asia for millennia.

The bird is visually distinguished by its long, curved bill and a tail that serves as a mechanical prop while it ascends vertical surfaces.
